Driving license categories
Check what vehicles you can drive in each category and what age you must be to pass the driving test.
AM class
Minimum age: 14 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.

Category A1
Minimum age: 16 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.
Motorcycle with an engine capacity of up to 125 cm3, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio of up to 0.1 kW / kg. Three-wheel motorcycle with a power of up to 15 kW. AM category vehicles.
Combination of vehicles – the above vehicles combined with a trailer – only in Netherlands.
Class A2
Minimum age: 18 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.
A motorcycle that meets all of the following conditions:
- power up to 35 kW
- power to weight ratio up to 0.2 kW / kg
- cannot arise from the modification of a vehicle whose power exceeds twice the power of the motorcycle
Three-wheel motorcycle with a power of up to 15 kW. AM category vehicles.
Combination of vehicles – the above vehicles combined with a trailer – only in Netherlands.
AND class
Minimum age: 20 years – if you have held an A2 driving license for at least 2 years. 24 years old – if you have not held an A2 driving license for at least 2 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.
Every motorcycle. AM category vehicle.
Combination of vehicles – the above vehicles combined with a trailer – only in Netherlands.
Category B1
Minimum age: 16 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.
Quad (for example, a large quad).
AM category vehicle.
Class B – I will buy a driving license category B
Minimum age: 18 years
Previous possession of another class: not required
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 driving license must be renewed after 15 years.
Inclusion: Class L, M
Motor vehicles – except for motorcycles with a maximum authorized weight of not more than 3.5 tonnes and not more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat. Trailers may be transported provided that: the maximum permissible weight of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg, or the maximum permissible weight of the trailer does not exceed the curb weight of the towing vehicle, and the maximum permissible weight of the vehicle combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. I will buy a driving license category b.
Category BE
Minimum Age: 18
Previously Owned Another Class: Class B Required
Validity: Indefinitely
Inclusion: Class L, M
Combinations of motor vehicles in category B and trailers exceeding the limits of combinations in category B. Both vehicles have a combined maximum authorized mass of more than 3.5 tonnes, or the maximum authorized mass of the trailer is greater than 750 kg and exceeds the curb weight of the towing vehicle, or where the maximum authorized mass of the trailer is greater than 750 kg trailer exceeds the curb weight of the towing vehicle.
For trucks with continuous brakes and some off-road vehicles, the trailer load must not exceed 1.5 times the maximum gross vehicle weight of the towing vehicle.
Class C1
Minimum age: 18 years
Previous possession of another class: Class B required
Validity: up to age 50, then renewal for 5 years
Inclusion: Class L, M
Motor vehicles – with the exception of motorcycles – with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 t but not more than 7.5 t and with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat. You can transport trailers with a maximum permissible weight of not more than 750 kg. Use in commercial transport of goods under 21 years allowed only up to 7.5 t zG including trailer (EEC 3820/85 Art. 5). I will buy a driving license category b.
Class C1E
Minimum age: 18 years
Previous possession of another class: Class C1 required
Validity: up to 50 years, then renewal for 5 years.
Inclusion: Class BE
Combinations of motor vehicles of category C1 and trailers with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 750 kg. The maximum permitted trailer weight must not exceed the curb weight of the towing vehicle. The maximum permissible weight of the vehicle combination must not exceed 12 tonnes. I will buy a driving license category b.
Category C
Minimum Age: 18 Years
Previous Other Class: Class B Required
Validity: 5 Years
Inclusion: Class C1, B, L, M
Motor vehicles – with the exception of motorcycles – with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tonnes and with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat. You can transport trailers with a maximum permissible weight of not more than 750 kg. Use in commercial transport of goods under 21 years allowed only up to 7.5 t zG including trailer (EEC 3820/85 Art. 5).
CE grade
Minimum age: 18 years
Previous possession of another class: Class C required.
Validity: 5 years.
Inclusion: Classes C1E, BE and T, and D1E if held D1;
Combination of class C motor vehicles and trailers with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 750 kg. I will buy a driving license category b.
Class D1
Minimum Age: 21 Years
Old Other Class License: Class B Required
Validity: 5 Years
Inclusion: Class B, L, M
Motor vehicles – excluding motorcycles – intended for the transport of persons, having more than 8 seats and not more than 16 seats outside the driver’s seat. You can transport trailers with a maximum permissible weight not exceeding 750 kg.
Class D1E
Minimum age: 21 years
Previous possession of another class: Class D1 required
Validity: 5 years
Inclusion: Class BE; if you have class C1 also C1E
Combinations of motor vehicles of category D1 and trailers with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 750 kg. The maximum permissible gross weight of the trailer must not exceed the curb weight of the towing vehicle.
DE category
Minimum age: 24 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.
A combination of vehicles consisting of a category D vehicle and a trailer. A combination of vehicles consisting of an agricultural tractor and a trailer or trailers – only in Poland.
A combination of vehicles consisting of a slow-moving vehicle (e.g. road roller) and a trailer or trailers – only in Poland. I will buy a driving license category b.
T-Class
Minimum age: 16 years.
Validity: No time limit before 2013, from 2013 the license must be renewed after 15 years.
Agricultural tractor. Slow-moving vehicle (e.g. roller).
A combination of vehicles consisting of an agricultural tractor and a trailer or trailers.
A combination of vehicles consisting of a slow-moving vehicle (e.g. roller) and a trailer or trailers.
AM category vehicle.
